my new friend c.

i was back on san juan island and the festivities that were going on must have been continuing the next day, and so i didn't want to leave quite yet. i thought i'd ask my new friend c (a new friend in real life who i met while on san juan island) if i could sleep at her place (just like i did in real life). there she was, not too far away, but what was that? she was flirting with that doofy guy! suddenly they were wearing stupid, matching hats! she came back up my way and i asked if i could stay at her place that night. 'sorry,' she replied. 'i just made a plan with (doofy guy) to stay with him tonight.' she said she was taking advantage of being away from her boyfriend, and was sure there would be a good-bye kiss with doofy guy the next day.

i was very disappointed.

Speaking of dreams with friends in them (insert clever segue here...)

I had a dream about dreaming, and you were in it! In my dream I thought that I might be dreaming, but I wasn't sure. So I decided to test myself by asking you a question I didn't know the answer to. According to my dream logic, if you knew the answer, that would indicate an intelligence outside my own head and hence reality. Of course, I woke up before I figured it out.

Apparently, just as Eliz represents librarianship in your dreams, you've come to represent dreams in my dreams. Weird.

how fun! do you remember the question?

one way to test if you are dreaming is to read something, look away, and then read it again. if you are dreaming, the words will probably not be the same the second time you read it.

also, i could have a secret code word. i'll think of one now (thinking........got it! if you see me again in your dream, ask me for my secret code word. if it matches the one i just made up, it means i was really there.

I think I was trying to remember someone's name that I thought you'd know, but it's gone. Trying to hang onto a dream is sometimes like holding up a barrel full of pudding, and when you wake up they take the barrel away. What you're left with is only the thinnest shred of what once seemed quite substantial. Of course, other times I remember the whole thing in detail for days.

Next time I see you I'll ask for the secret word. I suppose this would also be helpful in exposing all those imposters and dopplegangers you've got running around western Mass.
