monkeys, dogs, and mommies
i was hanging out with j and g at their house in their bedroom. it was upstairs and j's parents lived downstairs (in reality it is downstairs and her parents live upstairs). they now had three dogs instead of two! peanut, sagan, and a new enthusiastic dog. he was green with small spots and they had just adopted him. he was a little like a white pit bull with small spots who had been rolled in green dye, or in a puddle full of pollen. (this is funny, because g's dog peanut makes me think of another dog i once knew named peanut. the other peanut was black with white legs and chest. once she rolled in a pollen-filled puddle--there are an abundance of those on nantucket--and her white turned green. i then took to calling her pistachio!) anyway, this new dog was sweet but had a habit of biting gently. he once bit me on the chin, but it didn't hurt.
j was trying to convince me that i should get some 'sirius monkeys'. they apparently were tiny monkeys, about the size of a smallish cat. i asked her how long they lived and she said five years. i laughed at how ridiculous it would be to ask my landlady if i could have two monkeys along with my two cats i already have. j did not laugh. she was very serious, and was convined that i needed to get two sirius monkeys. (whatever they are!) interesting, though, that sirius is also called the 'dog star'.
anyway, along with all the dogs j and g had also adopted a young child. the gender changed in my dream from boy to girl, but this young one had dark, thick brown hair and g was brushing it. i was talking to them about how much their lives had changed in the past 14 months, now being parents and all. g seemed to be equating parenting a child with parenting dogs, but i thought the child was definitely going to be more work.
soon the child was in my arms and was falling asleep. she was now definitely a girl, and she now had strawberry blonde hair and her eyes were red and she was tired. j and g were headed out, and i asked them what their new daughter called them. j didn't know. i said 'say goodbye to mama j' and then j and g rubbed noses with the girl and left. i planned to leave soon, too, and i'm not sure what i thought this new little one would do by herself, in a new home, with three dogs (one of whom was green).

Monkeys creep me out. Seriously.
I can trace it all back to a Christmas experience with a monkey from many years ago. While I'm home for the holidays I'll try to track down the picture of the momentous event. It's too bizarre for words.
i want to see the photo!
i have always always LOVED monkeys. i used to try to eat my bananas like monkeys eat theirs. apparently that was with the peel pulled way way down. i used to ask my mom 'is this how far monkeys peel their bananas?' 'farther,' she'd say. and i'd peel farther.
i wanted to either BE a monkey or HAVE a monkey as a pet.
sadly neither ever happened.
