vocabulary
this is not a dream. just my thoughts today on vocabulary.
1. i was appalled. i was saving a document in some adobe product (acrobat, i think). a pop-up window warned me of some potential hazard of the properties i had chosen. kindly, it gave me the option to ignore its unsolicited advice and save the document "anyways". ANYWAYS???!!! anyways is not a word! sure, people in massachusetts use it as if it was, as do some of my lovely friends who are most likely reading this right now. that's all just fine. but adobe? putting it in writing? in a pop-up window? anyways. sheesh!
introducing deepfry: anyways #1 top offender!
2. just as much as the next guy i like to type words into google and click on the little 'definition' link in the upper right to get the definition of the word from answers.com. but... i just looked up the word frivolous (yes, i know what it means but i am using it in my promotion documentation and you can't be too safe). at the bottom of the definition i found an offer for a free dictionary toolbar. what a nice offer! i wonder exactly what this free dictionary toolbar is. i know, i'll read the descriptive text underneath to find out:
look up frivolous now define words quickly-free download!
huh?
3. more to come....

i got to work 12 hours ago and i am just now thinking of going home, just to return in 12 hours or less.
this may explain a few things, such as
1) why i have mid-day tirades about vocabulary
2) why i am too tired to think of a #2
3) why i am commenting on my own blog
You're so funny. It's okay, I post on my own blog, too. We can work through this sickness together....it's pulling us in....must....resist.....too strong......don't go into the light!
I think I say "anyways" sometimes, but I know there isn't an 's', but sometimes it just ounds like there should be....I used to use it exclusively because that's what I thought it actually was, but now I know better.....like I said, though, sometimes it still slips through (along with "afterwards" & a couple others!!) I'm workin' on it.
Well anyWAY, I should be of to catch the bus for class.
Until next time, this is Agent GLover signing out.
...and sometimes I leave the 's' off of "sounds" to compensate for the extra 's' in anyways. It's purely intentional, you see.
oh, and the missing 'f' in "off" is just for kicks.
Maybe there is a law of conservation of letters. It certainly applies to the R in Massachusetts vocabulary, which will disappear from smaht and turn up in idears.
Anyway, I broke myself of the anyways habit my sophomore year in college, but it was wicked hahd.
nick, you broke the habit as a wee sophomore in college? perhaps you can give some help to a dear friend of ours who will go unnamed, but her initials are Deep Fry.
p.s. those folks in massachusetts do say some funny stuff. it's wicked weihd.
Correcting your vocabulary is something that no one can do for you. It won't happen until you decide for yourself to change. Vocabulary is like love that way. No one can tell you when you're in love, you just know it. (Wait, I think that's a line from the Matrix. How trite!)
So, I think I'll let Deep Fry come around in her own time. Plus, this means fewer beatings for me.
you gotta look that shit up in the OED:
anyways, adv. and conj.
1. adv. In any way, in any respect, at all.
2. advb. conj. In any case, at all events, anyhow. dial. or illiterate.
anyway, i agree, drop the s.
