overdue books!
i was swimming around in some swampy water trying to retrieve four bound periodicals i had checked out from my library system. i was struggling to swim, and each time i reached for one of the volumes it would start to sink. i had to be careful and strategic with my attempts or i would lose them. there was some kind of voice-over, maybe a memory(?), of a library worker telling me that i would not be able to renew the books. if i didn't get them back right away i'd have very expensive fines. (in real life i owe my library $69 in fines!) nevermind the fact that the volumes were soaking in murky water, at least i'd have them back on time.

What is it about librarians and fines? "The cobblers children go barefoot," as the saying goes. I once owed more than $50 to Video Update in late fees, and it was all for Pee Wee's Big Adventure! TGF Netflix.
i've tried to write a witty retort,
but what i write just seems to fall short.
just singin' the blues
about books and shoes,
to catchy rhymes once again i resort.
I'm flattered that you composed a poem, especially when a cheap shot at my movie tastes would have been so much easier, and hardly unwarranted.
